February is Heart Month. Bistro 67 is featuring weekly heart healthy tips and foods that you can choose to meet some of these guidelines!

This week’s Focus: Healthy Fats such as Monounsaturated Fats and Omega-3 Fats

The Mediterranean diet focuses on including ample sources of healthy fats to reduce your risk of heart disease.  Monounsaturated fats are found in food items such as olive oil, canola oil, nuts and seeds, peanut butter, olives and avocado.  Monounsaturated fats stay liquid at room temperature and help to lower your LDL “bad” cholesterol.    Sources of Omega-3 fats include a variety of fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, tuna and also flax/chia seeds and walnuts.   Omega 3 fats decrease inflammation in your body, decrease triglycerides and lower blood pressure.  The goal is to consume 25-30% of your total  calories from unsaturated fats such as mono and polyunsaturated fats.

This week at the Bistro look for our meal of the day to be salmon on Wednesday.  If you have never tried salmon before or wonder if you might like it, I encourage you to try it this week!  Other places to find healthy fats at the Bistro includes: avocado on the turkey club sandwich, flax and peanut butter in the protein balls, olive oil used to sauté and flavor the pizza crusts, seeds/olives on the salad bar and nuts added to protein packs.   If you would like to add avocado to a sandwich just ask.  We try to prepare food mostly with healthy fats when it comes to cooking.   The bistro wants to keep your heart healthy!
