Occupational Therapy Tips for an Active and Safe Fall

As autumn unfolds with its vibrant hues and crisp air, it’s the perfect time to embrace seasonal activities and make the most of this beautiful time of year. I’m Kelsey Peterson, OTD, an occupational therapist at Hegg Rehabilitation & Wellness, and I’d like to share some engaging fall activities that not only celebrate the season but also keep you active and healthy.

1. Autumn Strolls

Take advantage of the stunning fall foliage by going on a scenic walk. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through a local park or a hike along a nature trail, walking is an excellent way to stay active. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes with good traction to navigate uneven terrain and fallen leaves.

I aim for a daily walk; just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and gives our muscles and joints the boost they need for a colder season.

2. Seasonal Gardening

Autumn is a great time for gardening as you can prepare food for the coming winter. Tasks like canning, clearing debris, and adding mulch can keep you active while giving your garden a fresh start for spring. Remember to use proper lifting techniques to avoid strain.

Gardening can be a moderate-intensity exercise that can improve cardiovascular health. Gardening activities like digging, raking, mulching, and carrying soil can increase heart rate and burn calories.

3. Pumpkin Picking and Corn Maze Walking

Visiting a pumpkin patch can be a fun, festive outing for the whole family. There’s nothing like a corn maze adventure, either. Talk about the perfect way to get your 30-minute walk in, while making memories! Just be careful to not trip or fall over fallen corn stalks and clumpy mud.

4. Outdoor Exercise

The cooler temperatures make autumn ideal for outdoor exercise. Consider activities like cycling, jogging, or even outdoor yoga. The fresh air and beautiful scenery can enhance your workout experience and keep you motivated.

If you love summer sunshine but can’t stand the bugs, now is the time to take advantage of fresh air, bug-free – one of the benefits of colder weather! Bye-bye, flies.

5. Seasonal Cooking

Autumn is known for its hearty, nutritious foods. Try your hand at cooking with seasonal ingredients like squash, apples, and sweet potatoes. Cooking can be a delightful way to stay engaged and make healthy choices. Invite friends or family to join you for a cooking session to add a social element.

If you’re looking to instill some healthier eating habits, schedule a visit with our Diabetes Education & Nutrition team at 712-476-8065. Take it from me: they have the best ideas and recipes!

6. Crafting and DIY Projects

The fall season provides ample inspiration for crafting and DIY projects. Create autumn-themed decorations or take on a home improvement project. Crafting can be a relaxing and productive way to spend your time, keeping your mind and hands active.

Do you love being crafty, but struggle working with your hands? Occupational therapy (OT) hand therapy is a type of therapy that helps patients rehabilitate their hands, wrists, and upper limbs after an injury or chronic condition. In this therapy service, we focus on improving fine motor skills, visual-perceptual skills, and cognitive skills to help you perform everyday tasks. If you think this type of service could benefit you, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

7. Volunteer Activities

Autumn is a wonderful time to give back to the community. Consider volunteering for local events like food drives or charity runs, like Glow the Distance. Engaging in community activities not only benefits others but also provides a sense of purpose and connection.

By participating in these fall-time activities, you can enjoy the season’s beauty while staying active and engaged. Remember to listen to your body and adapt activities to your fitness level to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

If you have any questions about how to incorporate these activities into your daily routine or need guidance on staying active safely, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at Hegg Rehabilitation & Wellness. We’re here to support you in making the most of every season!

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and stay active!
