What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Understanding Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex brain disorder causing both movement and non-movement symptoms. But it’s important to know: PD affects each person differently.
Who Gets PD?
While we’re not sure exactly why PD happens, research suggests it could be linked to exposure to certain chemicals and environments. PD typically affects people over 65, but it can also strike younger adults under 50, more commonly men.
Treating PD
Treatment for PD is different for everyone. Doctors may prescribe medicines or suggest surgery to slow down the disease. But almost all experts agree: exercise is key. Different workouts like aerobics, strength training, and balance exercises have shown to help. There are specific programs like LSVT BIG, Yoga/Tai Chi, and Rock Steady Boxing, often led by physical and occupational therapists.
