Enjoying the Outdoors, Even in the Winter

Just because it’s colder outside in the winter doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy some fresh air outdoors! With the colder weather also comes some fun activities that are only possible during the winter! Many of these activities not only allow you and your family to get some fresh air, but they also provide great forms of physical activity.

Ice Skating: Whether indoor or outdoor, ice skating is a great way to get some exercise! It might take a little practice to get the hang of it, but once you got it you’re sure to have a good time. You can head over to the All Seasons Center in Sioux Center during their public skate hours, or check out an outdoor rink in Sioux Falls.

Sledding: Sledding is a popular winter activity, especially if you have kiddos! Bundle up, grab your fastest sled, and head to the biggest hill! Try mixing it up by visiting different towns and checking out their popular sledding spots! This is a great, free winter activity. Once you’re done, warm up inside with some hot chocolate.

Skiing and Snowboarding: Another popular winter activity is skiing and snowboarding. Whether you’re snowboarding down a big local hill, or skiing in the mountains, these are great ways to get some fresh air. If you’ve never gone before, this can be a fun winter adventure! Start off on an easier course nearby, like Great Bear in Sioux Falls.

Snowshoeing, Hiking, or Walking: If you’re not into sliding on the snow, then this might be the activity for you! Find some local trails, bundle up, and enjoy the beauty of winter. Snowshoeing can be a fun variation in your daily walk and you can visit some pretty cool “off the beaten path” places. If you don’t have access to snowshoes, find some well-maintained trails to walk on. Rock Valley’s trail system is cleared of snow regularly and walking by the partially frozen river makes a wonderful view!

Ice Fishing: While this isn’t the most physical activity to do in the winter, it is a great excuse to get outdoors! Make sure the ice is at least 5 inches thick before venturing out. You will need a fishing license if you’re over the age of 16 and you might need some equipment like an auger to drill the whole or an ice shack to keep out of the wind. Once you’re all set up it can be a very peaceful way to enjoy the outdoors in the winter. If you don’t have all the necessary equipment, you can find a guide who will provide everything for you or ask around and see if some friends would be willing to let you tag along.

The fresh air is so beneficial and winter is the only time you’re able to do some of these fun activities! These are some of the memories you and your kiddos will look back on someday. We hope that you are able to bundle up and enjoy some time outdoors, even during the winter.
